Michael Sutorus

President

LCDR(ret) Sutorus was assigned to the USS THE SULLIVANS (DDG-68) as the Electronic Materials Officer (EMO) from 1998 to 2000 and completed the ship’s maiden deployment to the Arabian Gulf.

About Michael

Michael enlisted in the Navy in July 1981, attended Boot Camp and Basic Electricity and Electronics (B E/E) training in Orlando, FL.  Upon completion of B E/E he attended Electronics Technician “A” school at Great Lakes, IL and promoted to Electronics Technician Third Class (ET3) upon graduation.  His enlisted assignments include USS VREELAND (FF-1068) Homeport (HP) Mayport, FL; Ground Electronics Maintenance Division, NAS Jacksonville, FL where he was promoted to Chief Petty Officer (ETC) on 16 September 1990; and USS SARATOGA (CV-60) HP Mayport, FL.​

He was commissioned under the Limited Duty Officer (LDO) Program as an Ensign on 01 November 1994. His officer assignments include USS JOHN F. KENNEDY (CV-67) HP Mayport, FL; USS THE SULLIVANS (DDG-68) HP Mayport, FL; Naval Computer and Telecommunications Station Jacksonville, FL during which time he deployed to Baghdad, Iraq for 6 months in support of Operation IRAQI FREEDOM; Destroyer Squadron 24 Mayport, FL; Air Command and Staff College Maxwell AFB Montgomery, AL; and completed his military career at United States Central Command (USCENTCOM) MacDill AFB Tampa, FL where he retired from active duty August 2010.

His civilian career was working for the J3 Operations Department USCENTCOM as a Plans and Counter Narcotics Analyst until his retirement in August 2021.

Michael received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Computer Information Systems from Columbia College and a Masters Degree in Military Operational Art and Science from Air University Maxwell AFB.

His military awards include Surface Warfare Officer Insignia, Enlisted Surface Warfare Specialist Insignia, Enlisted Aviation Warfare Specialist Insignia, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Navy Commendation Medal (4), Joint Service Achievement Medal, Navy Achievement Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, and various other personal and unit awards.

He was nominated and elected as the USS THE SULLIVANS Foundation President at the August 2022 USS THE SULLIVANS Members Reunion and Board Meeting held in Waterloo, IA. Michael assumed this role from Carl DePoy who served as President from Sept 2019 until August 2022.  Michael is the first DDG-68 alumni to hold this position for the USS THE SULLIVANS Foundation (formerly known as USS THE SULLIVANS Association).
