Items of Interest

1. The Buffalo winter has finally passed (It was a mild one at that). The Naval and Military Park is set to open for the season this weekend (March 25). I am looking forward to a good year as they expect many groups and visitors to tour our ships. With an influx of funding the work on the Erie Canal Restoration Project is in full swing. This will be a year of transition for the Park. To make way for the new construction the former museum and store have been razed and all the outdoor displays have been stored. It will be 2007 before the new museum is built and the Park should be complete in it's new location. I will try to have some new photos on the website although there isn't much of a photogenic nature to display!

2. With the new Naval Park in the foreseeable(?) future I would also like to upgrade Radio Central on DD537. I plan on opening the Emergency Radio Room for Public view this year and this gives us added space for display and another operating position for special events on-the-air. If you have, or know of someone who might have WW2 to present military gear (radios, transmitters, etc.) and would like to donate these to our project rather than send them to the scrap pile please keep your webmaster in mind. We are also looking to add another ham position to NNN0NLR and W2TU so any old, unused ham radio equipment would also be appreciated. Gifts to our MARS station NNN0NLR could be tax-deductible. Thanks for any help.

3. The Photo Page of the ships and boats here at the Park is in desparate need of new photos. If you have any photos of the ships (DD537 or CLG4) or the boats (USS Croaker or PTF-17) please let me know. I'll be happy to include them in the Photo Gallery. Thanks! Photos of any of the ships that worked with DD537 would also be appreciated.

4. On June 16th at 1630z Radio communications were established between USS The Sullivans DD537 (NNN0NLR) and USS The Sullivans DDG68 (NSUL) on the Navy frequency of 7.382.5 Mhz. We believe this is the first time in Naval History that two Navy ships bearing the same name have comms with each other. Fifty plus years after being the first US Naval ship ever named after more than one person, USS The Sullivans is still making Naval History!

These are copies of the messages that signalled the beginning and the end of the Second World War!

If you are a former "Brass Pounder" or still at it on the ham bands (and if you have the time to download 1.21MB) you may want to try the 20 wpm CW Test before you read this copy of a cw message. Imagine copying this in the heat of battle! (Test portions highlighted in yellow)
